TRUE MYTHS

Concerning Hidden Realities and Human Destiny

About TrueMyths

Welcome to TrueMyths. The name's John. Like my apostolic namesake, I seek things hidden, a knowledge of deeper mysteries, the comprehension of ultimate realities and of human destiny. Also, I have a beard.

When you were a kid, did you ever gaze up at the stars, marvel at the immensity of it all, and wonder "Why I am here?" or even "What's the meaning of life?" These questions are inside all of us, but as the years go by, harsh realities bear down, and we lose sight of the innate sense that each of us was put here to discover and behold the glory of everything. TrueMyths is my flag planted in the barren landscape of the modern world, a rallying point for those who refuse to believe the lie that "We're born, we live, we die, we end."

How It All Started

I started TrueMyths a few years back as a vehicle to explore the creative and spiritual vision of J.R.R. Tolkien, the visionary author behind The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. From that has come numerous writings (you can view the TrueMyths 2014 - early 2017 archive here), a book, and a podcast. Another book is on the way.

Why Tolkien? Ever since discovering his Middle-earth works many years ago, I've grown increasingly fascinated by his view of reality. For me, it's not so much about the dungeons & dragons as it is the underlying philosophical outlook that allowed him to create a vast, complex "secondary world" before all the cool kids started doing it. What I have discovered is staggering, life-altering even, and I feel a deep connection and debt of gratitude to him. I've only just begun when it comes to Tolkien stuff.

Catholicism

My increasing fascination with Tolkien gradually exposed me to his Catholic faith. Under his influence, and for an innumerable variety of other reasons, I "swam the Tiber" in 2010, entering into full communion with the Catholic Church.

The Catholic Church is the greatest thing that ever happened to me. It is a reality of deep wonder, immense fascination, and continuing consolation. It binds my brokenness, and pushes me on to holiness and eternal love. It has saved me, and continues to save me. I'd be lost without it, because once upon a time, I was.

Catholicism is the ultimate source of hidden realities and the great font of wisdom concerning human destiny. I write about it here in the hope that I can unpack and even make practical its enigmas and obscurities. If I say something that puzzles you or even angers you, let's talk! Neither one of us is perfect, but if we seek the truth in mutual respect and good faith, I believe we will find it.

Music

Music portrays hidden realities like nothing else. I'm not sure when I fell in love with music, but it must have been somewhere around the time I first heard The Joshua Tree. I cherish great songwriting and well-crafted records. Favorites include Achtung Baby, Graceland, OK Computer, Spiderland, The Unforgettable Fire, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, Revolver, Ragpicker's Dream, and way too many others to name here. I write about the music I love, as a way of exploring it and appreciating it on an even deeper level. You can find my old music writings here. I'm working on several books about music at present.

I'm also a songwriter. I create music as Pale Horse Sailor. You can find my songs here.

Etcetera

Of course, I write about other stuff too (movies, games, TV, theoretical physics, weird stuff, math, the great salsa rojo vs. salsa verde controversy...), as the spirit moves me.
